What's up everyone this week I interview one of the band know from Chula Vista Powerviolence. San Diego is know for some sick powerviolence bands out there so here is the interview with Tourist enjoy...
- State your name and what band do you play for?
Sam, I “sing” for Tourist.
Justin, [drums] Tourist.
- How you doing?
S: Pretty alright.
J: Genuinely good.
- How did you guys get into punk?
S: There were a good amount of local shows with mixed bills featuring embarrassingly bad metalcore and deathcore acts as well as punk/hardcore bands when I was a kid. That and dial-up internet got the ball rolling.
J: Being a teenager.
- How did Tourist start as a band?
S: Me and Gabe (guitarist) started Tourist in my garage in 2017. The band was originally gonna be called X-Force and it was gonna take a less serious approach than Tourist has ultimately taken. Straight edge powerviolence was the general idea.
J: I'm not sure, I just do what I'm told.
- What was the line up?
S: When it started? Me on drums and Gabe on guitar. Since late 2019, it’s been me, Gabe, Justin, and Joseph (bass player).
- Whats the best show you guys have played?
S: We haven’t played very many shows, which has made all of them memorable in some way.
J: Park de la Cruz.
- How did you guys get the name of the band?
S: Blacklisted song.
- I noticed that you guys have the shop cart as a logo how did you guys get that as your logo?
S: The original album cover for Domestic Scene featured a shopping cart abandoned on a residential street. The cart just looked cool as a graphic so we’ve used it as a stamp/logo since.
- Whats your guys influences?
S: We played a show once where someone came up to us after our set and told us “you guys sound like 2006” and that has been the sharpest observation anyone has made of Tourist. I write the majority of the music, so if you want specifics, I’d say I’m pulling from East coast powerviolence heavies like Scapegoat, Mind Eraser, Breathing Fire, and Wolf Whistle, as well as bouncier, groovier acts like Blacklisted and Cold World. Also the entirety of Hatebreed’s “Perseverance” LP.
J: Personally Meshuggah. I speak for myself though.
- Do you guys have any upcoming releases
S: We have a 5 song EP called “Take Five” coming out soon. Currently writing an LP that will focus less on the blastbeats and more on the dirge, sludge, and grooves.
- any shoutouts you want give?
J: My mother.
S: All mothers, really.
