Gimp/ GlassxBite #27

What's up everyone how are you guys doing... any how i got the chance to interview a cool dude from some pretty cool bands from Arizona. this week I interview one of the dudes from Gimp/GlassxBite.. if you haven't check them out you should really awesome bands from Arizona. Here it is the interview with Joey from Gimp/GlassxBite. so state your name and what bands do you play in?? Hello, my name is Joey. And I’ve played in Gimp, and GlassxBite. how long was Gimp and GlassxBite a band?? Gimp played collectively for about 3 years, and called it quits in Winter of 2018. GlassxBite on the other end, came up about a year or so later and lasted a few months, from early September 2019 until June 2020. who in those bands how did the band start?? I met Payson and Raul at a show around 2015. They had a had a PV band that they were looking for a bassist for, and they asked if I can jam with them. One thing lead to another, and we jammed like a week later, and it all kinda just worked out. That band didn’t last too long, and after a lineup change, we made the choice to change the band name to Gimp, and started playing grindviolence. After Gimp split, I really wanted to play Powerviolence again, so I kept at writing songs and riffs, recording anything I thought would sound good and unique to hear. I wont call too much attention to GlassxBite and its previous drummer, but I met up with them at a show with their band sometime around Summer of 2019, and we jammed for a few practices, and recorded Demo ‘19 in one night! how did you get into punk? I got into punk when I was 10 or so. I had a friend who was big on collecting CD’s at the time, and I went over to his house, and found the discography of The Ramones, and I thought, “Those guys look weird! I wanna hear what they play.” We jammed them, and some Black Flag, and I was pretty much hooked from then on! how did you guys get that name? Gimp’s name came up as a name change from our first band, and it was more or less of wanting to have a simpler name, and to also reference Pulp Fiction. GlassxBite’ s name kinda came from an odd influence. I overheard someone who was remembering a time where they huffed gasoline, and they stated that they felt their bones were made of glass, and didn't want to bite down on anything due to the feeling. I just kinda kept that conversation in my head, and thought “That’d be a cool band name.” Thankfully, I’ve seen that dude again recently, and he’s pretty much cleaned up since the time I heard him. any cool show you would say are your favorite or favorites?? I’ll tell you, Gimp played some pretty cool shows. We did a small Texas tour with Depraved for 3 days, so that was cool! We played a benefit gig for the Dakota Pipeline efforts, and we played with Magnum Force for their last show. We also played with Capitalist Casualties when they came down and played Phoenix. What was cool about that show, is we played on an actual Halfpipe someone made in their backyard. Scum Human came down to Phoenix with Star Sete Sept, and thats where I became friends with Tommy. Gimp played with World Peace twice when they toured, and it was a pleasure both times. We also played with Stapled Shut and Suppression, and those shows also popped off! I can go on and on with cool shows we played, but those were the first shows that came to mind, haha. GlassxBite didn't really play a lot of shows all too much. We did however do our tape release alongside Corrupt Vision in a tiny ass Livingroom, so that was cool! Any releases coming out soon? GlassxBite has some material on the back burner. At this time though, I am the only band member in it, and drummers are a bit scarce in our scene. It might remain as a solo venture, but who knows? Anything is possible. what were or are the influences for both bands? Crossed Out, Despise You, Excruciating Terror, Infest, Extortion, In Disgust Any shout out you want to give? I want to shout out Gus V. from Practiced Hatred Records, as well as his band Depraved. Those dudes made some of my best nights possible for being so chill and supportive for a young band like Gimp to thrive in the early days. Payson, Elad, and Juan for pulling up to GlassxBites first few shows. Shout outs to any of the promoters that pulled through and helped Gimp on that big Summer tour we did in 2018. Shout outs to my parents for putting up with the loud racket I was making in the back of the house. Shout outs to Tommy from Scum Human, Tommy from No Time Records, and Shapeshiftmeth. And a big thank you for anyone who fucked with either of these bands and supported us in any way through their lifetimes. Thanks for your time Joey

Hoy Pinoy #26

What's up everyone this week I interview an og powerviolence band that's been around for a while I'm talking bout Hoy Pinoy. an all Filipino powerviolence band. when I got into powerviolence I discovered this band from there discography and there killer splits. I also seen them a handful of times.they never disappoint. Here is the interview with Hoy Pinoy, enjoy... What is your name and what band do you play in? My name is Jameson but everyone calls me Jamo. I play guitar and do vocals in Hoy Pinoy. I also have a upcoming new doom/sludge band called Deep Tomb with members from Cave State, Violencia and Bruce Campbell. How did you get into punk? I got into punk in the 7th grade through friends and video games like Tony Hawk Pro Skater. I started off listening to skate punk, which led to street punk and old hardcore, then fell in love with powerviolence/fastcore/grindcore. Who’s in Hoy Pinoy, how did Hoy Pinoy get started? How did you guys come up with the band name? Other members of Hoy Pinoy are the Castro brothers Matt(bassist) and Jon(drums). We’ve known each other since the 7th grade. In the 9th grade we started a Misfits cover band called The Goonies. We played backyard shows almost every weekend for a couple years. Later on, we decided to start a powerviolence band. Matt came up with the name Hoy Pinoy(think it was a parody name to Oi Polloi) and started making fast music about all the random shit we love and hate. What are your guys influences? Our main influences were Spazz, Charles Bronson, Fuck on the Beach, Capitalist Casualties,! Crossed Out, Infest, No Comment, Lack Of Interest, and Man is the bastard. Do you guys have any upcoming releases? Hoy Pinoy has been on hiatus for a while, we’ve only played a handful shows for the past several years. We do plan to get back together sometime in the near future to work on new shit though. any shout out you want to give?Shouts out to Nolan, Sarah, Mom, Dad, Justin, Matt, Jon, Joser, Joel, Sergio, Miguel and to all the people that support us! 626 Flipcore! Sordo #25

hey how is everyone??? this interview has been in the work for sometime but do to family and work I been postponing  it. Anyways the nardcore scene been known with a lot of awesome bands. with the city an  Agriculture and beaches near the city. I interview the guys for Sordo. here is it the interview of Sordo enjoy.

how are you guys doing???

Doing good Marco just super busy as always.
state your name and what band are you in??

My name is Eddie and I play in Metallica.

how did you guys get into punk???

Aw man idk lol I remember getting really into punk around high-school. I listened to a lot of Misfits and Circle Jerks then so I guess it was then.

how did Sordo get started???

Sordo had a number of name changes but it was originally started as Blue Cheese and it was just me and my brothers messing around. The band never took off then cause we didn't have a live drummer. Things started to solidify once we had a full time drummer.

how was the change from guitar to bass???

It was an easy transition. At the time when we made the change I was listening to a lot of different drum and bass bands. There weren't any drum and bass only bands in Oxnard at the time or ever to my knowledge so we decided to go that route when playing as a way to make ourselves stand out from other local bands.

How did you guys get the name Sordo???

Pure laziness lol. Names for bands and songs are the hardest parts to come up with. Names are tricky because you want something unique but also something that fits and describes the band fairly well. There was this old Myspace ska band from Mexico i think called "Sordos" as well so when we were looking for names we just thought we'd drop the S in Sordo(S) and keep as Sordo. We figured it was a total ripoff since they played ska and we played noise. It fit more because we played stupid loud in our earlier shows.

what was the line up from the beginning???

First OG lineup was myself and bass. Gerry on Vox and Mike on drums.

what's was the line up now????

The line up has stayed the same with the exception of drummers.

Our current drummer is Anthony. He plays in Shitbrains.

what's the coolest show you guys played????
Idk man they've all been pretty cool honestly haha its always awesome to play in front of a crowd big

Or small.

what are your guys influences????

There's way to many to list tbh. Influences come from a lot of different places whether its music or a movie with some dialog that would make for a cool sample.

Any releases do you guys have????

Yeah we have a few actually. We just released a split lathe with PCP Parade. It's sold out on our end but the PCP guys may have some copies. We have a split with Powerchuck that was released with a ton of great labels. We just did a repress of the En El Bosque rehearsal tape as well.

How did you guys get in the Nardcore 4 Life Comp????

They just asked if we wanted to submit a song lol but yeah i feel very happy to have Sordo included in
Any shout you want to give????

Shout out to Marco and his new baby!
Shout out to my wife Miriam for putting up with me and this hobby of mine for so long. Shout out to all the people who support Sordo and all the bands who've done splits with us and the labels who helped out too.

Growing up skateboarding.

What was the line when you guys started ??? (past members): When we first started it was Carly and I. and we've had more bass players than Spinal Tap has had drummers.

World Peace #23

The Band from the Bay Area that is Heavy Hitting  Drum and Bass.. no I'm not talking bout  Godstomper or DosxAmigo. I'm talking about the all mighty World Peace. Come out a couple years ago hitting some hits. I interview the drummer Derek. He tell me the history of the band. Here is the interview with World Peace enjoy. State your name and what bands are you in??? I’m Derek I play drums in world peace and guitar in fentanyl and have a new “solo project” called north America two that I’ll be releasing a tape for soon

H
ow did you get into punk???  My dad showed me the Ramones and the clash when i was like 11-12 and I’ve been into fast angry shit since

how did World Peace start and What was the line up when you started???
World peace started in 2017, the original lineup was me on guitar, Christian on bass and our homie jack on drums. When jack left the band I hopped on drums and we reworked our sound a bit to fit the new bass/drum set up. We were a two piece for about a year-ish and then added our other homie peter on second bass and that’s our current lineup.
what are some of the influences that the band has??? I try to take more influence from grind and noisecore sorta shit rather than hardcore, which I think has helped us dial in our sound a bit.

what's the best show you guys played???
The best show we’ve ever played was at core house in Portland on the tour with cell rot. Hong Kong fuck you, family vacation, and putocracy also played. Definitely one of my favorite lineups ever.
We knew we wanted a name that would turn heads and didn’t sound like a pv or grind band and  so we were all pretty stoked when we landed on world peace

how did you get the name World Peace????
We knew we wanted a name that would turn heads and didn't sound like a pv or grind band and so we were all pretty stoked when we landed on World Peace

how did you get the collaboration with limb bin??? its was really sick album.
He actually just messaged us one day telling us he really liked our stuff and so I asked if he’d be down to work together on something and he said yes. Super good dude!

any releases coming out???
We’ll be releasing a 20 track LP early 2021, I think in January if everything goes to plan. We’ll make a more formal announcement about it in the coming months.
Any shout out you want to give????
Shouts out zest bay and wcpv as a whole. Stop eating animals.
Thanks Derek for your time Derek

Madrugado 760 #22

Hey what's up everyone...So when people think of North County they think of bands Like Crossed Out, Crutch and So on... A couple of years ago a new band came out name Madrugado with influences of Sordo and Despise You.. putting North Countyback on the map. Here is the interview i did with Madrugado enjoy.
State your name and what band do you play in??? My name is Jonathan and I do vocals in Madrugado. I’m Jordy and I play drums. I’m Marcus and I play bass. I’m Alex and I play guitar.

How did you guys come up with the name?
I transitioned from working part time to working shitty full time early morning jobs around the age of 19 once I realized school wasn’t for me. I’d always hear “ya para trabajar en la madrugada” I don’t know why that always stuck with me but being Mexican and all of us being Mexican working basic working class jobs. I just replaced the “A” in Madrugada with an “O” and that was how I got Madrugado. I just thought it was appropriate to describe us and also sounded cool and heavy.  - Jonathan

how did you get into punk????
I used to listen to nu-metal in elementary cause my homie Fernie and his older brother Abe would always play it around me. Eventually I discovered AFI through music videos on MTV and started looking up similar artists through LimeWire and myspace. A few years later I found out about other hardcore/punk bands through skate videos and tony hawk games - Jonathan

I got into punk and power violence music after getting over hardcore bands and the hardcore scene. I think the first punk band I got into was Crime then I found Despise You and everything went downhill from there.  - Jordy

I got into hardcore and metal first but seeing local bands play, they’d usually have a punk or PV band play. Of course once liking, seeing, or even hearing about a band I go through the rabbit whole of who they played with and all that. - Marcus

what is the line up???
Alex - Guitar
Marcus - Bass
Jonathan- Vocals
Jordy - Drums

how Did Madrugado start as a band??

It’s a funny story, so one night we were all partying at one of our favorite bars called Livewire for Johnny's birthday and he reaches over to me drunk as fuck and said we should start a punk band. I thought this homie was just drunk and just messing around, but the next morning he texted me saying he was really being honest and to hit up my homie marcus who plays bass. Then I hit up Alex for guitar and that’s basically it. Drunk talk turned into reality. - Jordy

Basically what Jordy said. Madrugado started out of sheer need. My idea was to just play fast and heavy as fuck music. There really isn’t too many fast hardcore bands in San Diego even though we have a history with powerviolence dating back to the 90’s with bands coming through to the Che and playing all around SD. Shout out 760 legends Crossed out. I’m a huge powerviolence fan so I wanted to bring that style back and hopefully encourage others if interested in PV, to start up their own bands . I got tired of always having to bust a mission to either LA or TJ for shows and wanted to try to get something going on over here. Once covid is over with, we
definitely want to try to book more out of town bands and work with other locals to book sick ass shows. - Jonathan

what's the influences in the band? musically: despise you, cave state, dystopia, Sordo, rudimentary peni, no comment, crossed out, infest, no tolerance, smut, sex prisoner, negative approach, sheer terror, just any band that we look up to.

overall influences: lowriders, Chicano art and culture, myspace art, oldies, nu-metal, Memphis rap, depression, nihilism, social justice, animal liberation, anti- capitalism, anti-fascist, anti-racist, anti ALL bigotry.  fuck cops, fuck trump, destroy the school to prison pipeline and BLACK LIVES MATTER!

what's the best show you ever played??? That’s a tough once but we’re going to have to go with our most recent ones. Regional justice center at the Che cause it was cool playing with all fast locals and the show popped off! Lycanthro Pub in Tijuana was really fun ,it was our first time playing out there and the rec center is always a good time too.

any releases coming out???? Covid has gotten in the way of being able to write any new music but we already have some ideas for some new tracks. We just released a new tape “Chained Down” through Practiced Hatred Records and Salsa Verde Fanzine. Available on all streaming platforms too!

any shout out????? practiced hatred, salsa verde, road to ruins los Angeles, the rec center, bad works screen printing, standards record store, the Che cafĂ©, ground zero, shadieboy, tourist, headstone, bobxross, all beat up, Hong Kong fuck you, chafa, blood stained concrete, violencia, depraved, terror suspect, scalp, heckdorlan, up for the underground, ExNxD, balacera, every band we’ve played with, the homies, anyone that has booked us and supported us along the way.

Rabid Pigs #21

How is everyone during this quarantine times.
Here is an awesome band I stumble just like Sidetracked. I picked up a split from my homie Rob from Rotten to The Core, but I remember it was a Rabid Pigs/Grin and Bear It. I was listening  to the songs and they were straight to the point powerviolence. with an awesome name that they got from one of the og favorite bands. Here is the interview with Rabid Pigs
state your name and what band are you in???
Gregg Harrington and I do everything in Rabid Pigs.

what is the line up in Rabid Pigs???
Currently it's just myself. The band evolved into a studio project over the last few years.

How did Rabid Pigs start???
I really had an itch to start a straight edge power violence band because both things are big passions of mine, plus it was something I rarely saw outside of Vaccine, who were a big influence on the band. Unfortunately over the tenure of the band being composed of people other than just myself, some pretty big scumbags were involved with the band so I honestly think the best stuff has come from just me recording everything.

How did you get the name Rabid Pigs???
Obviously from the classic Infest track off of No Man's Slave. Funny enough, I kind of wanted to do a reverse Pig Destroyer thing and call the band Rabid Cops but I forgot when I started making art for our demo so Rabid Pigs just stuck.

what are the influences in Rabid Pigs???

How did you get into punk????
I actually had two entry points into punk. When I was 8 years old I really got into Green Day. Dookie had just come out and they were a big gateway into some more poppy punk and ska-punk that was going on in the mid-to-late-90s. I first saw them in 1998 and Samiam was supporting them. I also got into stuff like All, The Pietasters, The Offspring, Less Than Jake and Screeching Weasel around that time. After falling into the nu metal rabbit hole for about two years, I got back into punk in 8th grade after a kid in my class with a mohawk and plaid pants gave me a bunch of burned CD's.

how did you get the split with Sidetracked????
Honestly, I just asked! It was something I thought would be extremely awesome and figured, "might as well try". Rob from Rotten To The Core Records was kind enough to put it out after he had previously released our split with Grin And Bear It, an amazing grindcore band from Cleveland.

any releases coming out????
During quarantine, I was going through some old recording files and realized I had an unfinished song from the sessions where I did all the songs from the Sidetracked split and the Spoiled Heat EP. Lyrically, it was about how the police have overstepped their boundaries and the repercussions it has on the families of victims of police brutality, which is still very relevant today. I finished it and mixed it and threw it up on our Bandcamp with basically no promotion, so if you're so inclined to check it out, I'll include a link here: https://rabidxpigs.bandcamp.com/track/overcome-with-grief
Also, while working from home from March to June, I had been working on some drum-machine-driven noisecore stuff a la 7MON, Suppression and Scab Addict but I have yet to finish any of it. I don't have access to any great recording equipment or drums at the moment but hopefully I'll be able to record some proper material soon.

any shout out you want to give??
Black lives matter. Support extreme underground music and the labels that put it out. As far as plugging other things I work on, if you're into 80s horror movies and podcasts, check out my show Neon Brainiacs and if you're into 90s grunge rock check out Pummeled. Thanks for the interview, man, this was great!
