Chulo #11

Chulo in the Spanish Language means something cutie but in Colombia it has a different definition ..I got the chance to see Chulo at One Fest In La and I got a chance to take a picture with Sebastian... Here is the interview I did with Chulo enjoy....
Sebastian how did Chulo as band??
We started playing in April of 2009. The main idea of Chulo was more about an old school powerviolence sound, than grindcore. But mainly we wanted to do something different of what most (if not every) people were doing (and still do) here in Colombia, which is mostly d-beat and crust, and also from the gore and death bands that claim to play grindcore, and Chulo was the result.
How long has Chulo been a band???
Chulo was a band for 10 years. 2009 -2019 now we’re fucking dead
How did you guys get the name Chulo????
We were thinking of a short word, and as being a punk band we wanted something “disgusting” and “ugly”, haha. So finally we came up with the word “chulo” which here in Colombia is used to refer to the black American vulture, a bird that mainly feeds of carrion and lives near dumpsters and landfills.
How did you the split with El Rio Sordo???
We contacted Eddie because of his label DIY Noise and he edited our first compilation which was “Como Culo Pero con “H”” in tape format. After that, we continued talking and we finally agreed on doing something together. Sordo is the shit!
How did you guys get a split with Marion Barry??
I talked with Brando (one of Marion Barry’s members) with some regularity via Last.fm and we agreed on releasing a split together. Very fun split. Fast, fast, fast!
How did you guys On 1Fest in Los Angeles???
1Fest was a great experience, at least for me. It was kind of a dream come true. Great bands, great people and we made a lot of friends. It’s a shame we never came to go back to LA, but well…
I loved to see Sex Prisoner. Had lots of fun!
What are the Influences for Chulo???
Definitelly Spazz and Crossed Out. Also a lot of Medellín’s early punk and metal.
At what age did you get into punk music????
I think it was around 11 or 12… Then I was really involved into skateboarding so I used to listed to a lot of skate related punk bands like NOFX, Millencolin, Suicidal Tendencies and so on… The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater I and II soundtracks were definitely a huge influence on me then.
How many Bands are there in Colombia where from???
Right now in Colombia there are a lot of bands, not many involved into the power violence genre, but many bands that play really cool hardcore punk (or any of the related subgenres). I would personally recommend Amenazas, Muro, Destitute, Errante, Zen/Aku, Grinding, Perro con Kancha, Nastiness, Mohan and Mongólico (another band in which I play the guitar and do the voices).
What was one of the coolest shows you guys play and are you in any other band???
Each gig has had it’s bright side. The last gig we played was here, in Bogota, with Haggus, it was pretty fun and people were just enjoying themselves and all the disorder around.
And also de gig before 1Fest in Long Beach, was insane! We played with Crom and Cave State, among other awesome bands. It was a really great experience.
Yes, I do play in another band, as I said in the previous answer. It’s called Mongólico and we play grindcore, check us out:https://mongolico.bandcamp.com/
Is there anything you want to add or who would you like to give a shout out to??
Thanks to you Marco for giving us this opportunity, hope all my answers meet the expectations you had.
Shout out to everyone who listened, liked and supported Chulo during this amazing 10 years.
“How can punk be dead of powerviolence is forever?”
Thanks,
Sebastián.
Thanks for your time
