Chulo #11

Chulo in the Spanish Language means something cutie but in Colombia it has a different definition ..I got the chance to see Chulo at One Fest In La and I got a chance to take a picture with Sebastian... Here is the interview I did with Chulo enjoy....
Sebastian how did Chulo as band??
We started playing in April of 2009. The main idea of Chulo was more about an old school powerviolence sound, than grindcore. But mainly we wanted to do something different of what most (if not every) people were doing (and still do) here in Colombia, which is mostly d-beat and crust, and also from the gore and death bands that claim to play grindcore, and Chulo was the result.
How long has Chulo been a band???
Chulo was a band for 10 years. 2009 -2019 now we’re fucking dead
How did you guys get the name Chulo????
We were thinking of a short word, and as being a punk band we wanted something “disgusting” and “ugly”, haha. So finally we came up with the word “chulo” which here in Colombia is used to refer to the black American vulture, a bird that mainly feeds of carrion and lives near dumpsters and landfills.
How did you the split with El Rio Sordo???
We contacted Eddie because of his label DIY Noise and he edited our first compilation which was “Como Culo Pero con “H”” in tape format. After that, we continued talking and we finally agreed on doing something together. Sordo is the shit!
How did you guys get a split with Marion Barry??
I talked with Brando (one of Marion Barry’s members) with some regularity via Last.fm and we agreed on releasing a split together. Very fun split. Fast, fast, fast!
How did you guys On 1Fest in Los Angeles???
1Fest was a great experience, at least for me. It was kind of a dream come true. Great bands, great people and we made a lot of friends. It’s a shame we never came to go back to LA, but well…
I loved to see Sex Prisoner. Had lots of fun!
What are the Influences for Chulo???
Definitelly Spazz and Crossed Out. Also a lot of Medellín’s early punk and metal.
At what age did you get into punk music????
I think it was around 11 or 12… Then I was really involved into skateboarding so I used to listed to a lot of skate related punk bands like NOFX, Millencolin, Suicidal Tendencies and so on… The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater I and II soundtracks were definitely a huge influence on me then.
How many Bands are there in Colombia where from???
Right now in Colombia there are a lot of bands, not many involved into the power violence genre, but many bands that play really cool hardcore punk (or any of the related subgenres). I would personally recommend Amenazas, Muro, Destitute, Errante, Zen/Aku, Grinding, Perro con Kancha, Nastiness, Mohan and Mongólico (another band in which I play the guitar and do the voices).
What was one of the coolest shows you guys play and are you in any other band???
Each gig has had it’s bright side. The last gig we played was here, in Bogota, with Haggus, it was pretty fun and people were just enjoying themselves and all the disorder around.
And also de gig before 1Fest in Long Beach, was insane! We played with Crom and Cave State, among other awesome bands. It was a really great experience.
Yes, I do play in another band, as I said in the previous answer. It’s called Mongólico and we play grindcore, check us out:https://mongolico.bandcamp.com/
Is there anything you want to add or who would you like to give a shout out to??
Thanks to you Marco for giving us this opportunity, hope all my answers meet the expectations you had.
Shout out to everyone who listened, liked and supported Chulo during this amazing 10 years.
“How can punk be dead of powerviolence is forever?”
Thanks,
Sebastián.
Thanks for your time

Final Draft #10

When people say Inglewood is up to no good... 3 Bands come to me that are Heavy Hitters and are my favorite I got in touch with George of Final Draft
to  tell me the history how the band Final Draft came to be up to no good....
How did Final Draft Start as a band???

It started out with Jose and I. Once FD had played about 2 shows as a 2-piece, Jose met Luis via Geocities. I guess Geocities at the time was some sort of social platform that would allow users to visit profiles and check out content and what-not. And so these dudes started talking and Jose was super-stoked that this kid (Luis) was going to Inglewood High School and knew Oreo (Apathetic Youth- guitarist) and was into Powerviolence and Thrash so he set up a meet. Our “meet” would actually be our first jam as a 3-piece. I then switched to bass and had Luis take on guitar – maybe cause that’s how it was meant to be or because I just sucked at guitar..idk haha. We had our first show as FD a few weeks after that – 2003.

How did you guys get the name Final Draft???

FD was founded by me during class back in High School – junior year of 2003. Not sure what period/class subject I was in but I do recall writing lyrics to what would later become “Road Kill”. We had a substitute teacher in that day, like every other day it seemed, and this sub wanted us to study for an essay. Most of the class still had their backpacks on by the time class was done.  So that whole period was a big joke – hence a Final Draft essay.

How did you guys meet???  Kind goes with the 1st question...

I first met Jose during my sophomore year at Morningside High School. We had some class together and we’d have these laugh attacks that were caused by the most dumbest shit ever – almost as if we were forced to meet through laughs. The dude had a good vibe so we hit it off and later introduced him to bands like Spazz, Hellnation, In Control, Apathetic Youth, Monster Zero.. to name a few. He didn’t really adapt too quickly since Deftones played year-round for him. I thought that was dope too. Luis was later introduced to me by Jose (see first question).

How did you guys get the split with Apathetic Youth together???

I believe Luis set that one up, but might’ve been Jose – not sure. I know AY had listened to our self-titled EP and grew interest in FD so I think that helped pave the way for that split to happen. 2 bands from Inglewood – think that about sums up the motive.

I would say that was a sick split.... what would  you say are Final Draft Influences???

Thanks, Marco. It’s still a dope split. As far as influences – collectively: Spazz – Deftones – Iron Lung – Despise You – Crudos – Korn.. idk man. We each had our own style that would grow throughout the years. We knew Powerviolence was our shit and would dive right in regardless of the outcome.

What was the line up while you guys were a band???

Jose 2003-2014

Luis 2003-2016

George 2003-2016

Jaime (I Abhor drummer) 2014-2016

How long were you guys a band??

Jose, Luis and I were all in FD pretty much from 2003 up until 2014 when Jose left the band right after playing Grindcore LA.  I took some time off in between those years due to personal shit but was later active up until FD broke up in 2016. Luis had introduced me to Jaime who would later be our drummer for a few years. We recorded the Fissure split with Jaime.

Is there any project from you???

I’m currently hiding in plain sight without any involvements. I have a few projects in mind with my long-time homie, Orion (Apathetic Youth), as well as Jaime (ex-FD drummer) but none are solid as I’m more focused on my family and career.

Is there anything you want to add or give any shout out to??

Absolutely. Shout out to Luis and Jose for attempting to restart FD – can’t say it doesn’t flatter me each time they play/played as FD without me. FD is dead and is dead without me. But real talk, proud to have been part of something I helped create. Many great memories with them dudes. As well as with Jaime. It’s always great to see the homie rip in HARM and ABSURDITY. Last but not least, shout out to the Powerviolence scene and everyone who gave a shit about FD.

Thank you for your time George.

Thank you, Marco.

Heavy Artillery/Body Farm & Trash #9

So is person that I interview is known in the Oxnard Scene one of the bands that he was is influence for my band I want to thank him cause if I didn't get into punk Idk where I would be doing and also I want to take the time and say Rip Nik Ulmer I know I didn't personal know you but the music you did In Heavy Artillery & El Mariachi was awesome and I Thank you for that...What's your name???

Erek "Boner" Kudla. Got the nickname for highschool. The girls a year older made fun of the spelling of my name, that it was "just like erect"! har har har... then a friend of mine Chirs Stinnent came to school tippsy yelling "where's that Erect... that Boner guy"... and it just stuck.
What are some of the bands you were in the past???

A lot of bands that didn't do anything so I'll just say the bands that recording something.
-True Patriots was my first band in 1997 with my friend Donovan who introduced me to Trasher Magazine and ultimately punk in general. Played guitar and sang. Played our first show at my 15th birthday party. Played our second show by calling Eddie Numbskull and leaving so many messages on his hotline he finally just let us play a show.

-Bohemian Crapface 1999/2000 I was the worst guitarist in our group so I learned drums for this band. I think we only played twice but had a sweet tape. Those were some of the funnest times with Bryan Russell on bass and johnny Meehan on guitar/vox. It is also the reason I had to go back to high school for an extra semester.

-Shot in the Face 2000/2001 was the first band that I was in that played lots of shows. it introduced me to the process of booking and networking and all that. I can't even explain how Shot in the Face got to practice in the old abandonded house dubbed "The Ghost House" in the avocado orchard that was across the street from Pacifica HS with an empty pool and walls to graffiti on. But we did... for about six months. Crazy times. The last show there inspired starting my zine "So this is Progress" because of how the police treated a house full of punks.

- Heavy Artillery 2001/2006 the first time we jammed was at the Ghost House.  Used that knowledge to play more shows then I've ever played before or since haha.

- Knight Hound 2006/2007 this was with Brent Woodward, Mike Doane and Pat Bailey originally but then pat was our after the first show. Then we had Andrew Wakter and added Daniel Fries. With half the band being from Ojai we played some crazy shows up there.

- Covered in Scars 2007/2009 (I think, Porcho will correct me haha) this band had been around forever already. I actually worked with Craig when he was the manager at Round Table like 8 years prior. Tony Molino was on drums with Danny Ornee, Craig McCracken and Scott Porcho. It was really fun and we played some rad shows. Have done 2 reunions since then, which is fun and funny both at the same time.

- Grizzly Shark 2010 started with Javier Cruz, Brent Woodward and Scott Porcho. Got to play bass in this one. After a bit Scott was out and we got Jordan Darby. PLayed a few rad shows and then broke up.

- FBA 2014 I joined because I REALLY liked the band but they couldn't get a consistent drummer. Played a bunch of rad local shows and then it broke up.

- I filled in for Pale Hands, Oni, Global Warning and a few others for shows or tours or brief periods in between all of them.

What the bands or band that you in now???

- TRASH 2015 we started under a bridge in Ventura. Basically I really wanted to start a band themed after my dog Rowlee and his new found love for Trash on the last Pale Hands tour. My girlfriend (now wife)  Ocean-Breeze Santillano played drums and I wanted to bring in Kellen Handcock because we'd been friends forever (his dad was the singer for Global Warning) but we'd never been in a band together. We lived in a box van and Kellen lived on a boat so we always practiced by generator on the beach. Played a bunch of shows then got a job in Ohio and Ocean and I moved out just outside of Columbus. We've come back and played shows and flew Kellen out and played shows here in the mid-west. We're doing a summer west coast tour this year as well.

- BODY FARM 2018 Ocean and I moved to Baltimore, Ohio - 30 minutes SE of Columbus - July 2016 and have just been learning the scene and doing our "new people" thing for the last few years. We met Steven Bujdoso at shows in town. He was wearing a cool shirt of some kind (Spazz or Dystopia or something) and we clicked. He said "I want to play in a fast bad" and I said "Me too... Ocean you're singing" and that was it. We didn't have a bassist and I REALLY REALLY wanted a keytarist...but we finally settled on guitar through a bass amp and guitar amp with a foot switch in between. Recorded our first demo and within the week had a bassist. Alex Emmert came on board for bass. Both dudes are about 10 years younger but punk is punk is punk. Been playing a LOT of rad shows and I think this is gonna be a thing for as long as we play.
How did Heavy Artillery  start as a band???

I can't remember why I started hanging out with Chris Carey. We all called him "Chrispy". He was in our circle of skate friends. But for whatever reason we decided to start a band. He didn't know how to play bass so it was perfect. We picked up Nick Bracamonte and he was going to play drums and I was going to be on guitar. At the first practice all together Nick wasn't that great at drums but was good at guitar so we swapped. Then neither of them knew how to sing and play yet so I figured "I'll try on drums" and that was it. We recorded our first boom box demo right after that. Basically I learned that if you want to play shows you gotta book shows. So i started booking a TON of shows all over the place. Skate Street, The Livery, Cafe on A, house parties, generator shows.... and we played them all. in 2002 or 3 Nick Brac left and we got Nik Ulmer. "Other Nick". Nik took it to a-whole-nother level with Riffs, artwork, shows.... we went on 4 tours and put out a 7". It was nice.

How long was it a band???

Lasted till the end of 06 start of 07. not really sure. Basically I'm lame and had a serious girlfriend for a really long time. We broke up and it got weird with our circle of friends and I acted lame and quit most everything I did. Not a cool story at all. I could have made it cool... but it wasn't.

What was the best show you guys played in??

We played a lot of REALLY cool shows. Distort Vancouver fest with Hell Shock, Lebendin Toten, Chuck Norris, Stormcrow, Iron Lung and a bunch of others was crazy. That whole tour with Masisin was crazy. We played at a jr. High assembly that was a Thailand tidal Wave benefit. That was weird. We played with S.T.R.E.E.T.S. a bunch. Cattle Decapitation once. We played a few headlining shows at the end at the Loft (formerly Skate Street) that were crazy.
I remember  the show that you guys were playing  with I believe  it was with  James and The Mexicans.. I was tripping  out cause it was one of the 1st shows I ever gone to.. I was excited  that I was going to see Heavy Artillery  but the cops came to raid the show...The good things I was able to see you guys play at the Skate Park...

Yeah... cops are pretty lame. I remember my parents would always say "it's because you're putting yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time..." one time I had my dad work the door at this two day backyard festival I put on that the second day ended up getting canceled - El Rio Fest. I had gotten the permissions, I had porta johns, I had Primo Pizza come in... the works. The cops bardged in and he stopped them at the door "Five bucks".... they ignored him and walked in. He went back in front of the "hey guys it's five bucks"... they walked right back by him. he then tapped him on the shoulder "five bucks guys" they then turned around and had him up against the wall for touching the cop..... after that he apologized and admitted they walk all over us.
so who in your new bands???

Lots of people... but always friends

any cool shows coming up???

There are TONS of cool shows everywhere coming up. Here in Columbus and in the Mid-West there are crazy shows all the time. On the west coast crazy. In the 805... crazy. It's good times it seems like and it seems like the internet is bringing us all even closer together.

BUT Trash will be touring July 19-27 from Pasadena to Portland... so that's cool ;)
Is there anything  you want to add or give a shout out to??? Thanks for your time Erek

Of course gotta give a shout out to Nik Ulmer. He showed me what it meant to be "down for it". Distro, fliers, shows, bands...everything. You have to be all in to be "down for it". I think that has pushed me in every avenue of my life more than a lot of lessons learned.

Loathing #8

This is a another dude that's a good Homie From Boyle Heights where if from Union 13... He is one of the Bassist from a known band Loathing and good people...
What's your name and what bands were you in??? how did Loathing start as a band? What was the line up when you guys started and what was the line when you finished as a band?? That would have been sick if we played the same show as you guys....So through a mutual friend of Eman  and I (frank soto) we met and he invited me to come play bass in his band ARRASTRADA. I never played bass so I was like fuck it let’s do this. Things happened and things didn’t go as smooth.
Like a year and some months we jammed out with some dude but nothing came of it. Fast forward months later and eman has found some dudes on the internet they were from the OC and they wanted to link up and jam out.  I was nervous as hell and I said fuck it. I borrowed a cheap ass bass and got in my 96 Honda Civic hoping shit doesn’t overheat on our way to Irvine haha. We met chad (guitarist) and Brandon (drums). Chad and I found a mutual connection in our love for maiden and that’s when we started jamming out and soon releasing our demo.

Demo line up
Eman vocals
Chad guitar
Brandon drums
Hugo bass

Savage and forge split line up
Eman
Chad
Hugo
And Ivan on drums

Last demo
Hugo on bass
Chad on guitars
Steven on vocals
And nick on drums

What was the coolest show you played with Loathing??? How did Loathing get a split with Savage???
The coolest show we played or actually my favorite show was in Santa Cruz. We crashed depraveds tour and so we are in Santa Cruz on a Sunday trynna play and get back home ASAP. So the show is in someone’s house really nice house with a nice garden. They moved the furniture and everyone packed in the living room and we played. Stupid hot in there but fuck we played and everyone got into it.

Eman and I went to see capitalist casualties and savage  ( RIP SHAW ) at Los globos on sunset  and Eman passed around the demos to like Chris dodge and mike from cap cas. I don’t remember what happened but  he dug us and gave a nobody band a great chance to work together. It was mainly Eman who talked to everyone. Shout out to eman
What would  you say was your 1st show??? How did you get into punk scene??  What band do you play in now???

This is actually funny because a couple of months ago my best friends and I saw that movie kid 90s and it reminded me of when I was young
I live in Boyle heights and grew up there and when I was like 11 I met some older kids who were into skateboarding. One of the older kids we used to call him pinky took me to a backyard show near my house and shit was scary haha weird drunk people with spiky hair and loud music but it excited me and I fell in love with punk. My first actual venue show was a global threat at the knitting factory. I would Say my 1st show was a backyard show seeing one of my favorite band which is Heavy Artillery there from Oxnard. The Cops Raided The show but I was able to see them a couple months after at the Skate Park that's by parents old house.
I remember you guys played a show in Oxnard.. How did you get on that show... what would You  say are the influences for Loathing or your personal Influences??? Our second singer Steven is originally from

Ventura county so he hooked it up with some friends who wanted to play. I didn’t know any of the bands or the people but those damn tacos outside the bar and meeting new people was so dope.

Influences for loathing it’s kind of hard to say because we all dig different bands.
We all just wanted to play fast
My personal influences are a lot of 80s hardcore like pre powerviolence and a lot of thrash and heavy metal. So to name drop  septic death, SOD, heresy, ripcord, kaaos, dark angel, vio-lence , Iron Maiden, cryptic slaughter and a lot of Wehrmacht lol...Is there anything new for you in the future or you want to give a shout out to anyone???
I am currently jamming out with the homie Ivan who was our second drummer but we don’t have a singer or name yet hopefully soon.

Shout out to Marco  my best friends frank and meztli Juan Gio  who are always the first to know when I’m doing something new.  To chad Ivan eman Brandon Steven and nick for all the good times with loathing. Thanks for your Time Hugo

Thank you man
